MeasureBowling was born of a desire for a community to support each other. Sadly we are living in a world where support is becoming more and more needed. These attacks in Paris are only a continuation of attacks through the whole world, especially in the Middle East, and none of these should be ignored. We are still checking on the safety of the French Analytics community, thankfully no bad news received so far.

The local team is still to decide on whether MeasureBowling Paris will go ahead this Thurs but hopefully everyone else intends to. We thought our community could make a small gesture of support by switching from #NerdShirt to #PeaceShirt for this MeasureBowling evening.

These shirts can be purchased (if time for delivery, there are plenty of online options) or handmade. They could use the Eiffel Tower peace symbol, contain a message for peace or anything else that the wearer feels appropriate. It would be great to have team photos of everyone wearing #PeaceShirts to share. Just something so that we know that our community is supporting each other and anyone suffering from these attacks.

One tradition at MeasureBowling is a nerd shirt competition. The best two win a gift voucher from ASOS (to buy a decent shirt) and everyone gets a lot of entertainment value.

The rules are very simple:

Wear a nerd shirt to your local MeasureBowling event

Get photo taken of you in your shirt (bowling ball optional)

Enter comp by tweeting photo with name of entrant and hashtags #MeasureBowling and #NerdShirt

Winners will be announced on Friday and we will publish a blog post with all entries. For inspiration, check out some of the entries from the last MeasureBowling.

In case you weren’t aware, everyone who attends MeasureBowling has a chance to win – on and off the lanes. There are ten door prizes which all attendees (who sign up in advance) are eligible to win with a max of one per city. These will be announced during Thurs night.

The big prizes are for the top three bowlers (single game) who each win a £50 Amazon gift voucher. Be aware that you would have needed to roll at least a 169 last time with a record MeasureBowling score of 180! Details of all prizes from last time (including winning nerd shirts) in the MeasureBowling II wrap-up.

Where ever you are in Europe, have a great MeasureBowling night!

Less than two weeks now until the next MeasureBowling and numbers are looking very good. We are going to end up with around 17 cities involved which should mean about 350 members of the analytics community involved in a single event across Europe. Pretty impressive and a lot of the credit must go to Nicolas Malo who has put in an enormous amount of work coordinating and supporting local organisers.

It is a European wide event and one of the ways we tie all the local events together is through prizes. As with the first MeasureBowling event, we will be awarding prizes to the best bowlers in Europe, the best NerdShirts and general door prizes, whichever door you walked through. Up for grabs we have:

Three £50 Amazon gift vouchers (in your local currency) for three best bowlers (plus all the glory)

Ten £20 Amazon gift vouchers as door prizes – no more than one can be won in any individual city so these will be spread across Europe

Two £25 ASOS gift vouchers for the best (worst?) nerd t-shirts worn at MeasureBowling

The door prizes should be announced on the evening itself – as long as all the local organisers send through names of attendees…

To understand the concept of the NerdShirt a bit better, refer to the photos below. Basically anything which proves you are a geek is good. And the most clever or entertaining shirts will get their wearers a prize.

Don’t forget, we are looking for plenty of banter between communities before the event and especially on the night itself. All strikes should be tweeted and the more photos/updates the better.

See you on the lanes

Feedback from all 10 cities was that MeasureBowling was a great success with over 220 participants. Photos can be seen on the individual city pages (for those cities that remembered to take photos) and a blog post will be coming out soon with an overall wrap-up of the event. But getting to one of the most asked questions – who won?

Best Bowlers

The best score of the night a highly impressive 161, bowled by Javier Riestra from Madrid. He narrowly piped Mike van Hoenselaar of Utrecht, one pin back at 160. I believe Mike had the highest combined score over two games for the night as his other game came in at 158 (probably one of the most consistent bowlers too).

Third place went to Sara De Velasco Perez, bowling in London although part of the Spanish contingent that is working in London. She definitely wasn’t consistent and I believe didn’t trouble the scorers in the first two frames on her next round…

Congratulations to all three bowlers who received a £50 Amazon voucher each. We already have word that Javier purchased copies of Lean Analytics & Storytelling for User Experience, hopefully the other two invested their money in similarly wise fashion.

Door Prizes

Ten lucky attendees then received a door prize of a £20 Amazon voucher each. It didn’t quite end up that every city received a prize but it got shared around a bit. The winners were:

Mary Callery – Dublin

Eran Ben Sabat – London

Angel Vega – Madrid

Manon Snoeren – Utrecht

Hellmar Becker – Utrecht

Paula Sanchez Vazquez – Madrid

James Gill – London

Gary Douglas – Edinburgh

Benjamin Descazal – Paris

Vincent Larregle – Lille

Please, no one ever ask me to read out that list of names. My pronunciation is terrible at the best of times and I would have no hope with that list. It is great to see such a diverse mix of people and nationalities involved within this event.

Nerd Shirts

While there weren’t a huge number of people involved in this competition, it was very tightly contested by those who did participate. Next time I will make sure not to be the judge so my effort of “Pies are for eating, not for charting” can be rightly recognised.

The winners were:

Michael Notte – for an old school Apple shirt

Ashley Lindley – wearing a branded shirt from Initech, the software company from the cult movie Office Space

Alice Moore – a tribute to Amy Pond’s feelings about the Doctor (Who)

All three received a £30 ASOS voucher – to be used to purchase a decent shirt…

eMetrics

Everyone is a winner with the MeasureBowling eMetrics discount code of LETSBOWL giving you a discounted rate at all of the European eMetrics conferences. You get £130 off at eMetrics London and €150 off at eMetrics Berlin and Stockholm.

After several months of planning, it is amazing to think that MeasureBowling is only one day away. We have over 200 people registered across 10 cities in Europe which is a pretty amazing response and a great sign of the strength of the European Digital Analytics community. Thanks go out to all of the local organisers for the work they have put in to organise and promote this event. And thank you to all of their sponsors for supporting the event.

MeasureBowling Prizes

As this is a European event, there are prizes available to all participants, regardless of location (we will convert currencies). The top 3 bowlers in Europe will receive a £50 Amazon gift voucher each (sufficient for 2 or 3 Digital Analytics books). And everyone who has registered by midday tomorrow will be entered in a draw to win one of ten £20 Amazon gift vouchers.

MeasureBowling is intended as a fun event with a theme in at least London of NerdShirts. The best 3 nerd shirt wearers in London or any other city that participates (which I encourage) will receive a £30 ASOS gift voucher (hopefully used to buy a decent shirt). Inspiration can be found from Keystone Solutions NerdShirtFriday photos.

As a prize for everyone, eMetrics are supporting the MeasureBowling event with a discount code for the London, Berlin and Stockholm conferences. This code provides a discount of £130 for London or €150 for Berlin/Stockholm which is a fairly hefty difference on the early bird special. Just enter the code LETSBOWL and you are good to go.

MeasureBowling Discussions

Discussions will be happening on Twitter, just use the #MeasureBowling hashtag plus your local city to communicate. Banter is encouraged…

To help in this, we will be making the effort to tweet our all strikes so the bowler can be recognised by the community. Look out for tweets containing #MeasureBowling #Strike #<city>. We would like plenty of photos so please share the ones you take on the night.

So…

MeasureBowling tickets are still available in most cities (except Lille) so there is still time to get involved. You don’t have to be a Digital Analyst, you just have to bowl like one…

We are now into the countdown to MeasureBowling, only 3 weeks to go. Tickets are on sale for an evening of bowling in 8 different cities across Europe – just waiting on Warsaw to open up their registration process. Sales are going well across all cities and it appears we are going to have 9 fun evenings. In fact MeasureBowling Lille is already sold out.

The biggest event is currently looking to be MeasureBowling Utrecht. I have no idea how to pronounce that but I have discovered that it is a town in the Netherlands. They started off aiming for 40 attendees but after quickly selling out, have booked out the entire bowling centre. That’s right, an entire bowling centre in Utrecht will be full of Digital Analysts. Scary…

Congratulations on the work done so far in organising this to Ton & Reinout. And thank you to the sponsors of MeasureBowling Utrecht, Rabobank IKS & Adobe Netherland (Premium Sponsors), Sitespect & MOA (Side Sponsors).

A common question is how we are going to coordinate the event across all of the different cities and it is not something we have entirely worked out yet. The starting point will be Twitter and all tweets/score updates will use the #MeasureBowling hashtag. We are open to suggestions for a common scoreboard or anything else as long as this includes details of how to achieve it.

It is intended as a fun event which may take different forms in each city. At MeasureBowling London, we are planning to go with a #NerdShirt theme (great success at the 1st MeasureCamp) and to use the MeasureCamp #SwearJar (for Digital Analytics or bowling jargon). We will be awarding prizes for the best #NerdShirt (as well as best bowlers). There are no sponsors confirmed for London as yet, happy to talk to anyone who would like to be involved.

So, key action to take. Get your tickets. Now. Immediately. Please don’t wait until the last minute, help out your organiser by buying your ticket now so we know numbers. And tell your colleagues, friends and the people you talk to on twitter but have never met in person about MeasureBowling – get them to come along too, the more the merrier…
